Capt. Hemraj Shetty is a maritime executive with over thirty-five years of experience, including extensive shore-based expertise in ship management, crew management, and human resources, and sea-based expertise on diversified vessel types, including seven years’ command experience on large container vessels, Forest Product Carriers, and Bulk Carriers.
He began his sea career with Pent Ocean Steamships Pvt. Ltd in 1979, before joining Denholm Ship Management as a third officer in 1985. There, he progressed through the organization from Master onboard ships to a shore position as Ship Manager in Hong Kong, handling a full range of ship management duties. He was primarily responsible for facilitating the development and implementation of the company's Safety and Quality Management System, for vessel inspections, and for ISM/ISO Office and Shipboard audits (tankers, containerships, and bulk vessels).
Capt. Shetty migrated to Canada in 2002 to join Seaspan Ship Management Ltd. as a Fleet Personnel Superintendent at a time when the company had two container vessels and 40 crew. He has played an integral role in the development of the company into a global powerhouse, which now boasts 100 container vessels and 4500 seafarers after just 14 years in operation. He has also managed the planning and penetration of international markets, established manning offices / agents around the world, directed all global crewing initiatives, and developed a best-in-class training center to guarantee future talent. In addition, Capt. Shetty has led numerous special projects designed to improve internal controls, raise brand awareness on a global scale, and develop sophisticated crew management and talent-acquisition systems.
Currently serving as Director, Fleet Personnel, Capt. Shetty is responsible for the day-to-day management of Seaspan’s global fleet personnel operations and training and competence development of sea staff, including management of the company’s manning units in India, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Ukraine and China.
