Ted Muttiah is Chief Commercial Officer of South Asia Gateway Terminal (SAGT) in the Port of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He assumed this position on 1 August 2014.
Prior to joining SAGT, he was Senior Managing Director of a multi-national container sea transportation organization, overseeing the Middle East, based in Dubai since November 2012 to February 2014. In this role he was responsible for the group’s liner container shipping business activities of the company’s owned offices in the UAE, Bahrain and agency network in Jordan, Kuwait, Iraq, Iran, Qatar, Oman, Yemen, Djibouti, and Ethiopia. Previous to that position, Ted was Managing Director in Australia since January 2011.
He joined the organization in 2001 as Branch Manager in Melbourne, Australia. Since then he has served as Managing Director in Egypt (2008-2010), Saudi Arabia and Bahrain (2006-2007) and as Regional Sales Director in Indonesia (2004-2006).
Ted is a 30 year veteran of the international container shipping industry, having commenced his career as a management trainee with Mackinnon Mackenzie Shipping in Sri Lanka in 1982. He migrated to Australia in 1984 where he continued his tenure with principle P&O Containers in several frontline leadership roles till 1999. He subsequently served with Evergreen agency (2000) and with APL (2001 – 2014).
Ted holds an MBA (major in Strategic Management) from the Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship, receiving the best student award for his year group presented by the Australian Institute of Management.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport Australia, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and a Member of the Australian Human Resource Institute. He is also a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certified practitioner.
A product of Royal College Colombo, he captained the school at rugby in 1982 and represented Sri Lanka at the rugby Asiad tournament in Japan in 1984.
